Last week, my neighbor asked me the meaning of life while we were both getting our mail. I dropped my Amazon package (yet another set of self-help books promising certainty), stroked my chin thoughtfully, and gave her the most honest answer I could—I shrugged. She nodded sagely and said, “That’s the most intelligent thing anyone’s said all week.”

That moment got me thinking about our peculiar human journey with uncertainty. Remember how sure we were about everything as kids? The sky was blue because God painted it that way. Mom and Dad knew everything. If you worked hard enough, you could definitely become an astronaut-ballerina-veterinarian.

Then life happened.

We start life with the certainty of a TED Talk speaker, only to watch our convictions slowly dissolve into a series of educated guesses. One day you’re confidently explaining to your kindergarten class why dinosaurs were obviously purple, the next you’re standing in the grocery store frozen food section having an existential crisis about whether to get regular or cauliflower pizza crust.

Life has a way of serving up its biggest questions at the most mundane moments. Like pondering free will while waiting for your cat to decide whether to come inside or stay out. Or questioning the nature of consciousness while trying to remember if you already shampooed your hair in the shower (Spoiler alert? You probably did, but you’ll do it again just to be sure).

The comedy lies in how we humans still pretend we have it all figured out. We write lengthy LinkedIn posts about “The 5 Absolute Truths of Success” while secretly Googling “how to be an adult” at 3:03 AM. We confidently give relationship advice to friends while our own love life resembles a Jackson Pollock painting—beautiful chaos at best, complete mess at worst.

Social media has turned this into an Olympic sport of certainty. Our feeds are full of people who seem to have discovered all of life’s answers during their morning meditation session, sharing their revelations with the conviction of a calculator and the aesthetic of a lifestyle brand. Meanwhile, reality remains stubbornly, wonderfully messy.

And yet, something interesting happens when we finally stop pretending. When we dare to lower our hands in life’s great classroom and whisper those three terrifying words—“I don't know.” It’s in that moment of surrender that we might stumble upon something far more valuable than certainty...
